Competitive Functional Fitness is a sport which tests athletes’ proficiency across a variety of movement patterns, activities, and energy systems. Athletes must show their competency in various realms, including demonstrations of their strength, strength endurance, speed, bodyweight/gymnastics skill, and aerobic capacity. In each event, athletes are prescribed a certain amount of work (i.e. number of repetitions of a given movement) to complete. They then attempt to complete the required movements and repetitions as fast as possible. The athlete who completes the work the fastest is the winner of that event. Functional Fitness athletes showcase resiliency, in that they can perform to their max potential through the expression of strength, power and endurance.
Competitive functional fitness is quickly becoming more and more popular worldwide. However, until now there has not been a unified governing body to oversee things like competition rules, fairness, and safety. The International Functional Fitness Federation (iF3) fills this void by aiming to increase safety and fairness in the sport and provide competitive opportunities for athletes. One of the first goals of iF3 is to set out a clear definition of the sports requirements.
The iF3 is also focused on improving the accuracy of judging at Functional Fitness events. In order to enhance fairness in the sport, iF3 has created a judging seminar which is a prerequisite for any judge at an iF3 event. Certified iF3 judges will be listed in a database available to event organizers who wish to use certified judges at their events. The iF3 is also in the process of developing a comprehensive judge ranking system in order to award the judges who perform with the most accuracy.
Finally, iF3 will be offering a set of safety guidelines for event organizers. These safety guidelines offer recommendations on spacing of equipment, appropriate matting, and the presence of onsite medical help. These guidelines are meant to aid and assist competition hosts in setting up and developing a high quality and safe event.
